Submay: Komsomolskaya
First stop. Komsomolskaya Station, Moscow.
Komsomolskaya was opened in 1952 and is part of the Koltsevaya Line. While on paper it may be just one of 180 stations that make up the magnificent Moscow Metro, it is for many its crown jewel.
A major feature, as you shall see, of Russian and Soviet era stations is their unadulterated grandeur. Most of them look more like palaces and cathedrals than subway stops. Komsomolskaya is the prime example, with its grand dome, marble walls, Corinthian columns, crystal chandeliers and eight ceiling mosaics.
Komsomolskaya Station was designed by Alexey Shchusev. It was his first and only metro design. Talk about going out on top.
